Obama Plans to Force BP’s Hand on Oil Spill Fund

PRESIDENT Obama to Address Nation Tuesday Night on Gulf Oil Spill

President Obama will address the nation Tuesday night to talk about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The 8 p.m. ET speech will take place from the White House shortly after the president returns from a trip to the Gulf.

President Obama on Monday and Tuesday will make his fourth trip to the Gulf coast since the disaster struck on April 20. It will be his first overnight visit and, after three trips to Louisiana, his first to the states to its east — Mississippi, Alabama and Florida — which are in the direction of the spewing oil’s drift. The president will return to Washington in time to report to the nation on Tuesday night.

A brief outline of his plans is to legally force BP executives to create an escrow account reserving billions of dollars to compensate businesses and individuals if the company does not do so on its own. Administration officials say that President Obama, in his speech from the White House on Tuesday, will not only discuss the issue of claims against BP but also update the nation on efforts to capture and contain the oil, and on his proposals to reorganize the federal system for regulating offshore oil drilling.

  1. It's about damn time. I hope this is the beginning of his emergence as a true leader. I think he finally understands, now, the enormousness of this horrific environmental calamity, and that the world is looking to him to solve the problem in a resolute manner.

  4. Just what we need, a community organizer to tell an oil company how to fix an oil leak. He may not use the words "George Bush", but my best guess is that by 15 minutes into the speech he will either directly or indirectly point to a policy or person in "a prior administration" or "the Bush Administration" that caused this in full or at least in part, and insinuate that it had something to do with this disaster.
Unless he is going to say he's going to grab a mop and put on a mammy rag and help with the clean-up then there is nothing else I want to hear from this moron!

  5. Obama will: a) blame capitalism/business b) blame George W. Bush and Republicans c) suggest that we are too dependent on oil d) offer nothing substantitive to contribute to fixing the problem e) push his new stimulus agenda f) say, "let me be clear" right before he launches into some of the most ambiguous bureaucratic speech ever uttered.

  6. He can talk all he wants do we have to listen to his lies AGAIN? I will not believe one word he says. Another opportunity for Obama to continue the deception he does so well. Other than that he is a useless as a President

  7. Obama needs to be very careful with BP. So far they are cooperating and trying to clean up the mess. If he pushes them around too much, they are liable to suspend cleanup operations and take the matter to court to determine their actual liability. I don't disagree that BP owes reparations to all the fisheries affected by the disaster, but what Obama is talking about is a fight, and what we need right now is cooperation.

  8. His Gulf trip today and Tuesday will take him to Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, the three Gulf states he has yet to visit, since his first three Gulf trips were all to Louisiana, the most heavily impacted state. He planned public events, visits to beaches and talks with local officials and residents.

The president’s speech on Tuesday June 15th is scheduled for 8pm ET. It is expected to last 10-15 minutes to address efforts to contain the spill, the timeline for capturing the oil, the long-term recovery and restoration of the Gulf region and regulatory reform efforts at the Mineral Management Service.

  9. He can talk all he wants it's not going to solve the problem!!!! The only way this will be shut off is when the relief well is completed, and that is not supposed to be until Aug. If this oil makes it's way down to the FL Keys it will affect all the coral reefs, the everglades and everything in between. This state will be f##ked!!!!

  11. You right wingers are such hypocrites!!!! You've been screaming since Obama took office for less gov, less gov regulation, hands off, and to "Drill, Baby, Drill"....Now that there is an oil crisis, you are the same people screaming that Obama and the government is NOT doing enough!!!!!
You can't have it both ways!!!

  12. In my opinion, the federal government holds 40% of the blame for this man made environmental disaster. Interior, and its subordinate departments failed to assure that BP/Horizon installed the safety devises which would have had at least, a chance of containing the catastrohic explosion. Certified cleanup companies are begging to come and help and still no contracts let from his adminstration. Ordinary citizens with good ideas, and he will not use them. To me he is all talk and no action. Maybe this is for some devious purpose that he will not tell us.

Like I said in my previous thread there is nothing else I want to hear from this moron.

  13. Hey all you republicans I thought that government wasn't the solution to our problems? I thought free enterprise was the most efficent solution to all our problems. Your anti-government and anti-regulation polices have again been proven to be wrong. I for one am anxious to hear what President Obama has to say.

  16. This disaster is nothing but BP's fault. There is no way that this oil should be gushing out months after the fact. If BP can utilize a well to get oil out, they should be able to maintain it. For those that feel the government is not responsive enough, what can the government do if the well is still gushing oil? Lets be sensible here.

  17. Well obviously BP can't maintain it??? Or did you mean stop the oil. Seems to me they don't no how to shut it down!!!!!
